High Deductible Plan F

The high deductible version of Medicare Supplement Plan F offers coverage similar to Plan F, but you’ll have a $2,340 deductible to meet before it starts covering all of your coinsurance.

Since this plan technically covers Plan B’s deductible, it is not available to those who turned 65 after January 1, 2020 because of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015.

How does the High Deductible Medicare Supplement Plan F work?

First, Medicare pays its 80% of your covered healthcare services.

Then, you’ll pay your part until you have reached your $2,340 deductible for the supplement plan.

After that, your supplement will offer coverage identical to the normal Plan F and cover 100% of:

  • Medicare Part A coinsurance payments for inpatient hospital care for up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are exhausted
  • Medicare Part B copayment or coinsurance expenses
  • The first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance expense or copayment
  • Skilled Nursing Facility coinsurance
  • Medicare Part A’s deductible
  • Medicare Part B’s deductible
  • Medicare Part B’s excess charges

It will also cover 80% of a foreign travel emergency.

What if I’m not eligible for High Deductible Plan F?

If you want this plan but are not eligible because you turned 65 in 2020 or later, there is a high deductible Plan G. The only thing Plan F covers that Plan G does not is Medicare Part B’s deductible.

When can I enroll?

You can enroll once you have Medicare Part B. You will then have six months to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan with no health questions. This is a one-time open enrollment in which you cannot be turned down for any health conditions, you cannot be asked any medical questions, and you cannot be charged an additional premium for health reasons.

Technically, you can enroll at any time after you have Part B. However, if you sign up after your initial enrollment period, you will be subject to medical underwriting.
